"My main concern coming in to see Dr. Mauro was all of the toxins I had put into my body over a seven year period of medication use. A secondary goal was to lose weight to take some pressure off of a bad hip.
My only concern with doing Dr. Mauro's 3-Week Detox was I thought it was going to be too difficult to complete. That the items that were allowed would be unavailable or too difficult to obtain and, more so, that I would not be able to satisfy my hunger with only the allowed foods.

Sure, I had to make some adjustments such as getting up a bit earlier to prepare breakfast and get something together for lunch. But just like any routine, after several days it begins to be the new normal and it wasn't as difficult.
As far as 'side effects' goes, at every changing point during the detox, I would have mild headaches for a couple hours on the first day. This was occasionally accompanied by mild cramping. However, the effects quickly tapered off. I was usually a bit hungrier than I would have been on my regular diet, but that just made the meals I did have taste even better.
Quite honestly, in the final week, as I grew closer to the end I felt quite good both physically and emotionally. I had accomplished something that I thought would be nearly impossible for me -- I had lost almost 10 pounds -- and I felt much healthier.
The weight that came off has had a noticeable effect on my hip. Taking off 10 pounds was like taking a small child off of my shoulders.

I have cut down my lunch intake as well. Now, I usually have a bowl of homemade soup every day. I snack on almonds or fruit as opposed to peanut butter, M & Ms and crackers.
As mentioned above, the one true benefit, at least for me, is the way it has altered the way that I approach eating. I think about what I eat now. I still have a pop now and then, a burger, or even some chips. However, I make it an exception rather than a common practice.
I would say to a friend, that even if you've tried a "detox diet" before, give this one a chance.

Often my patients come to me with one or more symptoms or conditions. They want to find out what natural treatments can be used to treat them.
Well…my line of thinking is—before resorting to medication or heavy duty treatment—let's first try to resolve the discomfort with simple "house-cleaning." Which is basically what my detox plan is.
I like to put patients on my 3-Week Detox & Vitality Diet so we can establish whether what's ailing them is truly a condition -- or merely the residual side effect of toxins in the body.
The theory is to clear up the problem without resorting to medicines-pharmaceutical or natural. I don't want people taking a whole bunch of vitamins if they don't need to.
And guess what? More often than not, the symptoms simply disappear after the detox.
There is no serious condition. Just a build-up of toxins in the liver, kidneys, or bowels that cause a lot of disruption.
After food is chewed, swallowed and leaves the stomach, it's broken down into its smallest form in the small intestine.
These tiny food particles—and any accompanying toxins—are then passed along to the liver, which continues the process of extracting toxic and otherwise useless material and prepares it for excretion.
First, the liver tries to convert the toxin into something that the kidney can easily eliminate.
If it's not easily sent to the kidneys, then the liver will send it back down the small intestine preparing it for departure.
From there, it either exits your body at the end of your large intestine (AKA colon) or gets reabsorbed and sent back to the liver.
Do you see how messy things can get if your liver, kidneys and intestines aren’t functioning properly?
You'll notice the word "live" is contained in the word "liver." In fact, at one time in the English language it was called "lifer." The word derives from a Babylonian word which means "that without which life cannot continue."
Your liver is the second largest organ in your body (your skin is the largest), and the hardest working one. Here are just a few things this three pound organ under your right rib cage does for you...
However, what I focus on in my 3-Week Detox & Vitality Diet plan is one of its major functions... the ability to filter, detoxify and eliminate different toxic substances.
When I mention liver to my patients they are quick to say "I don't drink a lot of alcohol so my liver should be fine. Let me tell you about a great film called Super Size Me. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you see it.
Morgan Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald's®- three times per day-for 30 days.
Before the experiment, three doctors determined he was in above average health. At worst they predicted his cholesterol may increase slightly.
Yet, by day 20 of his experiment he gained 25 pounds, suffered depression, sexual dysfunction and liver damage.
In fact, his liver was in such a critical state his doctors advised him to cease the Mickey Dee experiment immediately. They compared the damage of two daily Big Macs and an egg McMuffin to a case of severe binge alcoholism.
A diet loaded with white flour, refined sugars and especially trans-fatty oils can push your liver into a critical state.
Remember, you can live without your gallbladder. You can even live without a colon (though I don't recommend it). But you can't live without your live-r.
Fortunately the liver can bounce back, under proper healing conditions. Just remove the aggravating foods/drinks, add some nutritional support and it will start regenerating its damaged self. No other organ can do this! Too bad the heart or brain aren't so resilient.
I witnessed this "Supersize-Me" effect firsthand a few years ago, when a 17-year old booked an appointment at my clinic. She had a serious problem that is rare amongst teenagers.
Her MD had discovered via blood tests and an ultrasound that she had a fatty liver. This is where your liver gets clogged up with fat. It can lead to cirrhosis (permanent scarring) and even cancer. Conventional medicine recognizes only a few major causes of fatty liver. Two of which are: too much alcohol and the hepatitis viruses.
Well, this young lady tested negative for hepatitis. And she wasn't touching any alcohol -- although they indirectly accused her of drinking. So they said...
Well, when I interviewed her it didn't take me six minutes before I found a likely suspect for her congested liver... She had a part-time job at Burger King®, which included free meals for all the employees. So she was consuming burgers, fries and pop, not once a week, but nearly every day!
Of course, most allopathic doctors don't acknowledge the fact that a diet high in saturated fats and refined oils can even cause problems in the liver.

In fact, most of my patients enjoy it immensely. It gets them back on the routine of healthy eating.
Now you may be wondering...
"Do I REALLY need to do a detox? I eat well, exercise, rarely drink alcohol and feel good most of the time."
That's fantastic! You're probably less toxic than the average person.
But here's something interesting you should know...
The obvious external sources include everything we absorb through our gut, lungs and skin. E.g. pesticides on our fruits & veggies, pollutants in the air, hormones in the meats, chemicals in our drinking water...
Even natural substances have toxic elements. Wood, for instance, contains formaldehyde, PCBs, cadmium, dioxins, etc.
In fact, in Germany, they no longer have wooden desks in schools because of the PCBs they contain. (PCBs are believed to cause liver damage, memory and learning impairment as well as hormonal imbalances. As it turns out, polar bears exposed to high levels of PCBs have been reported to have developed both male and female sex organs.)
But even if you think YOUR air, food and drinks you ingest are super clean and pure -- it doesn't matter because... Your body makes internal toxic waste EVERY SECOND!
It's a normal part of cellular metabolism. Even the healthiest cell will take in nutritious blood and expel a waste product. Most of that waste is eliminated -- but some residue may remain.
Just like when you realize you need to scrub out the kitchen trash can, even though you've been changing the bag every day. Or the bathtub scum that accumulates even though water is constantly flushing it out every day.
Should you scrap all your wooden desks? Shall we have a big PCB bonfire in the middle of downtown? Of course not.
What about plastic desks?
Well, too much exposure to plastic isn't great either.
Metal desks?
Well, that might cause heavy metal poisoning.
First thing in the morning... shampoo, soap, toothpaste -- all these have toxic elements to them.
Plus, larger cities are home to many factories, which means every breath you take contains pollutants.
Of course, this, sometimes, leads to the "everything-causes-cancer-everything-is-deadly" mentality.
That's not quite true. Instead...
A little bit of anything won't give you cancer (save uranium), won't hurt your immune system (excluding HIV), won't give you a heart attack (except cyanide).
Instead, it's the accumulation of little things that may slowly poison you over the decades if they are not eliminated completely.
The board that approved the chemicals in your household cleaners, state that the dosage is so low that it can't harm you. True, mostly.
But when you combine that with the super-low dosage coming off your carpet, toxins from the styrofoam in the new computer box, the recent paint job of your home, the laundry detergent after-effect on your clothes, the pesticide wafting through the window form your neighbor's lawn... and let all that build up over years -- then it may start having negatives effects on your energy, bowels, concentration and overall health.
Now I'm not telling you to stop living. Far from it.
Instead, two or three times a year, you need to clean yourself out. Thoroughly! Not just a rinse.
Your body is actually quite adept at healing itself... when you let it!
It only runs into problems when it gets overwhelmed, or never has time
to do some serious scrubbing.
Know this: Your liver, skin, bowels and kidneys are constantly releasing
toxins. Normally, they can only handle so much, and mainly deal with
the superficial stuff.
So, if you reduce the amount of congesting food going into you, your body can now focus on removing more of the deep down dirt.
Just as you'll have your home cleaned extra well a few times a year so you need to have your biological home thoroughly scrubbed clean two or three times a year.
That's why I encourage my patients to participate in...
I'll give all the details showing you how to ease into and out of it.
Sometimes cleaning isn't all that fun, but the results make it worth it.
Doubly so when it comes to the results of a detoxification diet. Plus, it's far more fun eating vitalizing fruits and vegetables than cleaning out the basement.

I include a very detailed chart which was made with a sophisticated $1000 software program.
The software allows me to enter in information such as a patient's symptoms, conditions and various organs I want to target & support. It cross references all the information I input and spits out a highly detailed & customized food list of what the patient should be eating.
Foods listed in green support the organs of detoxification, i.e., the liver, the kidneys, the gastrointestinal tract, the lungs, the skin and the lymphatic system.
There are specific vitamins and minerals that are necessary to support those detoxification organs so I added them into the software program as well.
The green colored foods are also high in all the B vitamins (in particular vitamins B1, B2 and B5), vitamin C, amino acids like glycine and cysteine, as well as many minerals like magnesium, selenium and zinc.
What you'll see is a summary of all that information cross referenced.
Those foods in green are ideal to eat during the detox. Red foods should be avoided because they negatively affect the detoxification organs.

Which leads me to the next common misconception I often hear...
When people think of a detox they equate it to a colon cleanse. Which typically means taking a bottle of herbal laxatives or some fiber.
This is not what I'm talking about here.
Not to say that cleansing the colon with herbs, fiber, foods and/or colonics isn't a good thing. They have their part. But there are other organs that are equally, if not more important, that need to be cleaned up during a detox.

These symptoms are generally an indication that toxins are in the process of being eliminated. It is important to discuss these symptoms with your doctor as he/she may provide you with further recommendations.

Some detox plans found online may be harmful to many people. I'm not here to point fingers, but you should be wary of quick, short liquid fasting type detox "miracle cures." If such a thing was healthy and good for you, I would be recommending it to my patients.
Instead, such detox "diets" will put your body into a state of shock. It can't handle the abruptness of the cleanse. You'll send a whole flood of toxins to your unprepared liver and kidneys and make things a lot worse.
